Following two and a half years of construction works and signalling upgrades, three-carriage trains are now in service between Bank and Lewisham. The longer trains provide 50 per cent more space for passengers and represent a major step towards the service which will be running for the London Olympics in 2012. The next phase of upgrade work will extend platforms at Beckton, Prince Regent and Custom House for ExCeL.
The £325 million programme has included:
- Lengthened platforms & extended canopies.
- A new £22m South Quay station.
- Upgraded junctions and track.
- A £13m upgrade to Tower Gateway station.
Work on the Stratford International extension, consisting of seven stations, continues with the extension due to late 2010.
Works have been planned to have the minimum of impact on passengers, with most work taking place at weekends and at night. This work may cause disruption to services and those living around the work sites. However, we will always aim to limit inconvenience to a minimum.
