1 Places of Exchange by Toby Paterson

Stations along Stratford International Extension

Toby Paterson was appointed as principal artist on the design team for the Stratford International Extension. Toby has developed a series of interventions within the architectural design of the stations along the route, creating a visual identity for the line subtly rooted in the area that surrounds it. Taking his inspiration from the topography of this changing part of East London, Paterson developed a graphic vocabulary of pattern, colour and form, which corresponds to the unique qualities of each location on the route. His series of tessellated patterns, integrated within the glass screens, creates a recognisable identity for the line

2 Kate Davis

DLR: Langdon Park Station

DLR selected Kate Davis from a shortlist of artists for the commission of a sculptural/drawing piece for Langdon Park Station. Her approach was to draw on the local context and the experiences of people who use the station every day. The result is three distinct yet interrelated elements: a poetic text work applied to the canopy, a 'drawing' set within the paving encouraging a visual association with location and place of living; and two sculptural forms visible from the platforms.

3 Street Life by Michael Craig-Martin

Woolwich Arsenal Station

Acclaimed artist Michael Craig-Martin designed a stunning major public artwork for the two-storey staircase of the state-of-the-art Woolwich Arsenal station. It was the first time he worked in ceramic and his first public transport project. Integrated within the mosaic tiling of Greens End, one of the station's two entrances, the ceramic artwork depicts a series of everyday objects against a background of vibrant colour. The artwork encircles the entrance walls and the staircase well welcoming daily users and visitors alike, and inviting the audience to recognise a shared language of objects. Craig-Martin has always been concerned with a desire to make sense of the world we share, and the expressive power of the ordinary objects.

4 Time & Tide by Alison Turnbull

Across the DLR network

Time and Tide by artist Alison Turnbull is a serial artwork integrated within the panels that enclose the cycle shelters at stations across the network. Alison's inspiration draws upon two other universal systems: the lunar cycle and tidal rhythms, represented on the front and back of the panels. The artwork creates a distinctive visual identity for this amenity, which is subtly transformed for each location. Alison's commission can be seen at Shadwell, Gallions Reach, Greenwich, Island Gardens, Beckton, Royal Albert and King George V. A new shelter will installed at East India during 2011.

5 Solid Turbulence by Anthony Lam

Shadwell

Solid Turbulence is a photographic and audio project by artist Anthony Lam, developed with the residents of three neighbouring tower blocks, close to Shadwell Station. Lam grew up in nearby Limehouse and has long been interested in East End narratives: the optimism, hope and realities of the diverse communities who have for hundreds of years settled in the East End. The series of photographs included one of a small tree pictured in state of reawakening from Winter, and serves as a reminder of the principles of earlier social reformers who worked to bring about significant change in British urban society. Lam’s images show how in a densely urban environment, nature survives to establish its place, and individuals come together to create new paths and networks outside the planned social order.  To find out more about DLR’s Public Art Programme, visit www.dlrart.co.uk
